Having stumbled across this website, and after much internal turmoil, I have narrowed it down to this cupcake as the one I’m going to attempt to bake.

How cute would they look baked in these gingham cupcake holders from Bake it pretty?

Summer reading

Hardcover Template 5 5/8 x 8 11/16

This book came to my attention by way of my inbox and the amazingly fashionable Searching for Style newsletter.

I will definitely be picking up a copy to add to my summer reading list. A good book, a sunny spot and a cold glass of this, bliss.

Here’s the blurb about the book, from Amazon.

“You can’t have depths without surfaces,” says Linda Grant in her lively and provocative new book, The Thoughtful Dresser, a thinking woman’s guide to what we wear. For centuries, an interest in clothes has been dismissed as the trivial pursuit of vain, empty-headed women. Yet, clothes matter, whether you are interested in fashion or not, because how we choose to dress defines who we are. How we look and what we wear tells a story. Some stories are simple, like the teenager trying to fit in, or the woman turning fifty renouncing invisibility. Some are profound, like that of the immigrant who arrives in a new country and works to blend in by changing the way she dresses, or of the woman whose hat saved her life in Nazi Germany. The Thoughtful Dresser celebrates the pleasure of adornment and is an elegant meditation on our relationship with what we wear and the significance of clothes as the most intimate but also public expressions of our identity.”

Design Inspiration

July 20th, 2010 No comments

Once upon a time, when Violet was far off in the future, I stumbled across these images in Elle Decor. I instantly new that this lovely apartment, would become the inspiration behind the interior for the boutique, which at this point was one of three names, Blanche (after my Grandmother) The Library (after my love of books) or Violet because the saying “shrinking violet”  was the endearing term my Mom used to describe my shyness as a child. I’ve always liked that phrase because it turned my awkwardness into something pretty and abstract. Not to mention, violets are one of the rarest and most special of flowers.

This is the wonderful Marais apartment of Vanessa Bruno. I loved it’s light and airy feel and the soft pastels and mix of modern and vintage.

I new I wanted the store to feel like a friendly apartment and I have forever loved Paris, and this is how it began. That edition of Elle came everywhere with me on my hunt for fixtures for the store. I think I managed to find almost the exact coffee table here.

If I couldn’t imagine it in Vanessa’s apartment, It wouldn’t work in Violet. And that lovelies, is how it all came together.
